Moi family protests GSU seizure of Eldoret land opposite State Lodge

Lawyers for the family of former President Daniel arap Moi say armed GSU officers removed workers from a 1996-held parcel in Eldoret after a directive that properties adjoining the State Lodge be vacated.
The family of the late former President Daniel arap Moi has protested the occupation of its private property in Eldoret by General Service Unit officers and is demanding the immediate reversal of a directive requiring the land to be vacated, People Daily reported on 18 October.
Through lawyer Moses Mutisya, the family said officers removed workers managing the property opposite the Eldoret State Lodge in Uasin Gishu County on Saturday, 17 October. The company was notified on 16 October that the land had been occupied. “The said GSU officers then proceeded to inform our client that a senior government official had directed that all adjoining properties to the state lodge were to be vacated immediately,” Mutisya said.
The lawyer identified the disputed property as Eldoret Municipality/Block 8/62 and said the family had owned it since 1996. He demanded that the relevant authorities remedy what he described as an injustice, warning that the family would take legal action if the directive was not withdrawn. The identity of the senior official said to have issued the order remains unclear.
The dispute follows a government push to address encroachment on land belonging to State Houses and State Lodges. In February 2026, State House Comptroller Katoo Ole Metito told the National Assembly's Administration and Internal Security Committee that encroachment had complicated renovation and security plans at presidential residences, and said about 100 acres belonging to the Kakamega State Lodge had already been recovered.
Metito also cited previous repossession efforts at the Eldoret State Lodge, where the government recovered land that had been occupied by a club. The disclosures prompted MPs to call for the recovery and protection of public land set aside for State Houses and State Lodges.
