The Kano State Government says it will construct 50 houses alongside each of the planned five-kilometre rural roads across the state's 36 Local Government Areas, an initiative expected to deliver an estimated 1,800 housing units.
The plan is aimed at addressing the state's housing deficit while transforming rural communities into modern, well-planned settlements. Governor Abba Yusuf announced it at a stakeholders' meeting convened to develop strategies for smooth implementation, particularly on land compensation and the resolution of grievances.
Representing the governor, Commissioner for Rural and Community Development Dr Abdulkadir Abdussalam said the proposed settlements would be equipped with essential public infrastructure. He listed healthcare facilities, markets and police outposts among the amenities to be provided alongside the housing projects.
The initiative, tagged the "5km Abba Gida Gida Rural Model Cities", is expected to promote balanced development, improve living conditions and stimulate economic activities in rural communities across the state.
Commissioner for Housing Development Architect Ibrahim Yakubu and Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs Alhaji Muhammad Tajuddeen Othman commended the administration for prioritising rural housing and infrastructure development. Chairmen of the 36 Local Government Areas also expressed support for the initiative and pledged their cooperation to ensure the projects commence smoothly and are completed within schedule.
