Ghana’s National Housing Fund to launch EasyRent rent-advance scheme

Written on

Ghana’s National Housing Fund plans to launch an EasyRent scheme before the end of 2026 to offer low-interest rent advances, alongside fresh investment in social housing and a national homebuyers database.

Ghana’s National Housing Fund (NHF) will launch an EasyRent Scheme before the end of 2026 to provide low-interest rent advances for Ghanaians struggling to pay rent, its Chief Executive Officer, Mr Prosper Hoetu, has said.

Mr Hoetu said the Fund would also invest in social housing to support vulnerable communities and expand access to decent accommodation, and would commit resources to ensure vulnerable people are not left behind in access to housing. He said existing social housing models could be strengthened and scaled up across the country.

He was speaking at the closing ceremony of a two-day National Conference on Housing Finance in Accra, held on the theme “Adequate Housing for All: Innovative Financing for Ghana’s Housing Future,” which brought together stakeholders to discuss solutions to the country’s housing finance challenges.

The NHF also plans a national homebuyers database and digital marketplace that would provide real-time information on housing demand and supply, including prospective buyers’ income levels and profiles, to help the Fund design housing products suited to their financial circumstances.

Mr Hoetu announced plans to work with banks to finance the completion of unfinished houses so that prospective homeowners can occupy them, with the Fund and partners assessing incomplete buildings, determining the cost to finish them and providing financing that beneficiaries would repay gradually.

He said the completion initiative could also create work for construction workers and young people, but noted that it requires improvements in land title documentation to give banks the assurance needed to lend. The NHF, he added, would work closely with the Lands Commission to establish a process for perfecting land titles and supporting housing finance.
