Ghana to begin social housing construction in 2027, NHF chief says

Written on

Ghana's National Housing Fund says construction of social housing projects is expected to start in 2027, with designs, stakeholder consultations and site selection now under way.

Ghana's government expects to commence construction of social housing projects in 2027 as part of efforts to make decent and affordable accommodation accessible to more Ghanaians, the Chief Executive Officer of the National Housing Fund (NHF), Prosper Hoetu, has announced.

Mr Hoetu said preliminary work was under way, with attention focused on architectural designs, consultations with relevant stakeholders and the selection of suitable locations for the proposed developments. Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, October 12, he explained that the ongoing preparations would help determine the scale of the projects and other implementation arrangements before construction begins.

He said the government was committed to ensuring the houses would be affordable, particularly for households unable to secure decent accommodation through the conventional housing market. “Between now and the end of the year, we will be completing designs, discussions, locations and all that before we talk about numbers that we will be building, but I can assure you that these houses will be very reasonable and affordable,” he said.

The NHF chief said the government was also exploring cost-effective construction methods to help reduce building expenses while supporting environmentally sustainable housing. He cited the pilot District Housing Programme, which uses compressed earth bricks, as an example of efforts to adopt climate-resilient building technologies.

The number of housing units to be constructed and the specific locations are expected to be determined after the current preparatory phase is completed.
