The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has urged the Kano State Government to compensate traders whose shops were demolished in June 2023, saying many lost their only source of income.
The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has asked the Kano State Government to compensate traders whose shops were demolished in June 2023, shortly after Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf assumed office. The appeal was delivered on his behalf by Ibrahim Mai Bushira during a special prayer session organised by the affected traders at the Eid Ground in Kofar Mata, Kano.
Mai Bushira said the Emir had written to Governor Yusuf requesting compensation for the traders and measures to address the financial losses they suffered after the demolition. He said the exercise had caused severe hardship among traders, many of whom depended on their shops as their primary source of income.
According to Mai Bushira, some of the affected traders have reportedly died, while others developed high blood pressure after losing their businesses. He urged the state government to consider the traders' demands so that they can rebuild their businesses and restore their livelihoods.
The chairman of the affected traders' association, Auwal Umar, thanked the Emir for his support and intervention. He said many traders remain unable to continue their businesses and are struggling to support themselves and their families.
The prayer session was organised by the traders to seek divine intervention and government support, more than three years after the demolition left a section of Kano's commercial traders without shops.
