The Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria approved more than N208 billion in housing and mortgage loans in 2025 and disbursed over N120 billion, its managing director said at the World Habitat Day commemoration in Abuja.

The Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) approved more than N208 billion in housing and mortgage loans in 2025, the bank’s managing director and chief executive, Shehu Osidi, said on Monday, 19 October 2026, at the commemoration of World Habitat Day and World Cities Day in Abuja.

The event was organised by the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development. Osidi said the bank disbursed more than N120 billion during the period to finance housing development, mortgage loans, home renovation and other housing-related initiatives.

He said FMBN financed 6,911 affordable housing units in 2025, achieving about 96 per cent of its annual target of 7,200 units under the Presidential and Ministerial Deliverables. The bank described the performance as a reflection of efforts to improve access to housing finance and support affordable housing development.

The N208 billion approved in 2025 is an increase of at least 191 per cent on the N71.5 billion recorded in 2024. Osidi said disbursements spanned programmes designed to support individual borrowers, property developers and cooperative housing schemes.

He also confirmed the formal launch of the Diaspora National Housing Fund (NHF) Mortgage Loan, which lets Nigerians living abroad apply for mortgage financing to buy property at home without returning to complete the process. The product was launched in London on 7 August 2026. FMBN said approval remains subject to affordability assessments and other eligibility requirements.

Two further products are planned before the end of October: a non-interest mortgage scheme for NHF contributors seeking alternative financing arrangements, and a rent assistance programme aimed at easing rental payment pressure on federal civil servants.
