CRDB Bank secures $111m from FMO and Shelter Afrique for SMEs and housing

CRDB Bank has signed $111 million in financing agreements, including $36 million from Shelter Afrique Development Bank for housing and construction lending and $75 million from FMO for SMEs.

CRDB Bank has secured financing agreements worth $111 million from international development finance institutions to expand lending to small and medium-sized enterprises and to housing, the bank announced at its Africa Investor Forum.

The agreements were signed on the sidelines of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund annual meetings in Bangkok. They comprise $75 million from Dutch development bank FMO for SME lending and $36 million from Shelter Afrique Development Bank to support housing and construction finance.

Of the Shelter Afrique facility, $10 million has been allocated to CRDB Bank's Democratic Republic of Congo subsidiary to expand financing in the Congolese market.

The deals were announced through the CRDB Bank Africa Investor Forum, organised with Invest Africa to connect international investors with opportunities in Tanzania, Burundi, the DRC and the United Arab Emirates. Zanzibar finance minister Juma Malik Akil and Bank of Tanzania governor Emmanuel Tutuba attended alongside Tanzania's finance minister, Khamis Mussa Omar.

Long-term funding remains a binding constraint for Tanzanian developers and households buying homes, with most local bank credit short-tenured. A dedicated housing and construction line is intended to extend loan tenors and support project financing.

CRDB also announced expanded cooperation with Afreximbank on trade finance and payment systems, and launched a sustainability impact reporting framework with JPMorgan and Natixis.

The practical effect will hinge on pricing and eligibility: the bank has not disclosed the interest rates, tenor limits or collateral terms attached to the new housing and construction facilities.
