China-Mozambique pact targets 12,000 prefabricated homes in Maputo

An agreement signed at the PLPEX trade fair in Macau brings together two Chinese firms and a Mozambican partner to deliver 12,000 prefabricated housing units in Maputo.

A landmark agreement signed on Thursday at the Portuguese-Speaking Countries Products and Services Exhibition (PLPEX) has paved the way for a 12,000-unit prefabricated housing project in Maputo, Mozambique, bringing together Chinese firms from Beijing and Sichuan with a Mozambican partner.

The deal was signed at the exhibition, which runs alongside the four-day Macau International Trade & Investment Fair and is positioned as a platform for trade and investment between China and Portuguese-speaking countries.

The agreement brings together IEC International Supply Chain Group, a supply chain services platform, and Sichuan Shudao Urban Construction Group, a subsidiary of one of Sichuan's largest state-owned enterprises. IEC will oversee supply chain services and supply chain financing for the project, while the construction group will act as the engineering, procurement and construction contractor.

Wang Ying Wu, president of the supply chain group, said many African countries are in a critical phase of infrastructure expansion and urban development, creating strong demand for large-scale construction projects. She said Macau's international business environment and strategic advantages make it an important bridge between mainland enterprises and Portuguese-speaking markets.

Peng De, the construction group's general manager for Africa, told Macau News Agency that the company's core businesses span infrastructure construction, renewable energy and mineral resource development, and credited the Macau government with helping to bring the partnership together.
