Bauchi group gives Bala Mohammed seven days to reverse 61-house allocation

Written on

An association in Bauchi has issued a legal notice demanding that Governor Bala Mohammed withdraw the allocation of 61 housing units to security personnel and redistribute them to civil servants.

A Bauchi-based association has given Governor Bala Mohammed seven days to reverse the allocation of 61 housing units to security personnel, warning that it will institute legal proceedings against him and the state government if the decision is not withdrawn.

In a legal notice dated October 20, 2026, issued through its counsel Musa Ogah & Co., the association's president, Alhaji Ahmed Hassan Buzaye, questioned the reported expenditure of billions of naira in public funds on the housing project and argued that the properties should instead be made available to state civil servants.

The group said allocating the houses to security personnel could undermine the housing needs of Bauchi State civil servants, many of whom it said continue to struggle to secure affordable accommodation, and argued that public resources should be allocated transparently, equitably and in line with relevant laws and regulations.

It also asked whether the government had adequately considered existing federal housing provisions for security agencies and the long-term implications of allocating properties to personnel who might subsequently be transferred out of the state. The group said the timing of the allocation ahead of the 2027 general elections could raise questions about the perceived independence and neutrality of security agencies.

The notice, signed by managing partner Musa Mohammed Ogah, said the proposed suit would challenge the legality of the procurement and allocation processes, including their compliance with the Bauchi State 2026 Appropriation Law, and that the group would seek an injunction to prevent further distribution of the housing units pending the determination of any case.

Senator Shehu Buba Umar has separately called on the Bauchi State House of Assembly to investigate the acquisition and proposed allocation, audit the source and authorisation of the funds and determine whether the expenditure received the necessary legislative approval. He also asked relevant agencies to disclose the procurement process, the categories of intended beneficiaries and the legal basis for committing state resources to the project.
