The Uganda Railways Corporation will on Monday, 19 October, begin an exercise to remove illegal encroachers from its land along the Kampala-Mityana, Mubende and Kamwenge-Kasese railway corridors. In a notice, the corporation warned that no illegal encroacher on its land would be spared, signalling a renewed effort to reclaim railway land occupied without authorisation.
The operation will initially target the corridors linking Kampala, Mityana, Mubende, Kamwenge and Kasese before extending to the Busoga railway line. The Busoga line traverses several districts, including Kamuli, Luuka and Jinja, although the corporation did not specify when the exercise would begin in that area.
URC said it would provide updates as implementation progresses, but did not immediately disclose the number of people or structures likely to be affected. Details on enforcement arrangements, whether affected occupants had been issued prior notices, and the measures in place to handle disputes were also not immediately available.
The planned operation comes amid efforts to protect railway land from illegal occupation and to safeguard infrastructure reserved for railway operations and possible development. The corporation reiterated that all illegal encroachment on its land would be addressed as the exercise gets underway.
