Tanzania plans new Dar es Salaam market for small-scale traders

TAMISEMI minister Professor Riziki Shemdoe says a new market will be built in Dar es Salaam using 5 per cent of Ilala Municipal Council’s own-source revenue while a larger permanent market tied to the Msimbazi Valley redevelopment is completed.

Tanzania plans to build another market for small-scale traders in Dar es Salaam, with construction to be financed through 5 per cent of Ilala Municipal Council’s own-source revenue, the minister of state for regional administration and local government has said.

Professor Riziki Shemdoe, who heads TAMISEMI in the Prime Minister’s Office, announced the plan during a meeting in Dar es Salaam with Kariakoo business leaders, street vendors and regional officials. He said the market would provide an immediate solution while the government continues preparations to complete a larger, permanent market project associated with the redevelopment of the Msimbazi Valley.

The minister thanked President Samia Suluhu Hassan for approving the use of the council revenue to improve commercial infrastructure, including the construction of markets.

Shemdoe directed the permanent secretary of TAMISEMI, the Dar es Salaam regional administrative secretary and the Ilala district commissioner to oversee the project and ensure it is completed on time, and pledged to revisit the site after one month to assess construction progress.

Kariakoo Shopkeepers’ Association chairperson Severine Mushi said traders were ready to continue paying taxes and contributing to national revenue provided the government improved the business environment, and commended the measures being taken to address challenges facing traders in the area.
