Tanzania launches diaspora property ownership programme at BuildExpo 2026

Written on

Mkuyu Africa has launched the Miliki Ardhi Diaspora programme at the 2026 Building and Construction Exhibition in Dar es Salaam, urging Tanzanians abroad to invest in land, homes and commercial buildings at home, with some projects offering instalment terms.

Mkuyu Africa has urged Tanzanians living abroad to use part of their employment and business income to invest back home in land, residential houses and commercial buildings as they plan for their future.

The call was made during the launch of the Miliki Ardhi Diaspora programme at the 2026 Building and Construction Exhibition (BuildExpo) in Dar es Salaam. The company said the initiative seeks to enable Tanzanians living abroad to take advantage of opportunities to own property in Tanzania.

Speaking at the event, Mkuyu Africa chief executive officer Juneid Othman said the programme was designed to help Tanzanians in the diaspora lay the foundation for their future while they are still working and earning abroad. "Right now, you have the strength to work and earn, but after several years, you may want to return home. That is why we want to help you start owning property early," he said.

Through the programme, a Tanzanian living abroad can begin the process of owning a house or other property in Tanzania while still overseas, with some projects offering instalment payment arrangements depending on the applicable terms and conditions.

Salim Abubakar said some Tanzanians living abroad had previously faced problems after sending money to relatives to build houses, buy plots of land or establish businesses, only to return after several years and find the plans had not been implemented, leading to family disputes and mistrust.

Minister for Lands, Housing and Human Settlements Development Leonard Akwilapo urged investors in Tanzania to increase investment in industries, particularly the manufacturing of construction materials, to strengthen the country's capacity to implement major projects and compete with foreign companies, and called on Tanzanians abroad to invest at home and support locally produced goods. Investment experts advise prospective buyers to conduct due diligence on ownership documents, contracts, project locations, payment terms and associated costs before purchasing property.
