Kenya's Kitengela modern market to accommodate 2,500 traders on completion

Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has given an update on the ongoing construction of the Kitengela Modern Market in Kajiado County, saying the facility is being developed as a 24-hour retail centre that will accommodate up to 2,500 traders once completed.
In a statement issued on Friday, September 18, 2026, Omollo said the project is funded by the national government through the State Department for Housing and Urban Planning and is intended to provide organised trading spaces for local businesses.
"The Kitengela Modern Market demonstrates this approach in action, providing the infrastructure needed to turn informal trade into a more productive and structured local economy," the PS said, describing the market as part of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.
Priority in the allocation of trading spaces will go to grassroots small and medium-sized enterprises, informal traders, women and youth, Omollo said. The facility is being built to national standards and will include nursing rooms and crèches, cold storage for perishable goods, clean water facilities and a digital ICT hub to support electronic payments.
The organised layout is also expected to ease street congestion and improve public order. The update follows the government's unveiling of the newly built Mogotio Economic Stimulus Programme market in Baringo County a week earlier.
