Kenya Power gives 68 Jomvu occupants 90 days to vacate Mombasa land

Written on

Kenya Power has issued a public notice ordering 68 people occupying its land in Jomvu, Mombasa County, to remove buildings, crops and livestock and leave within three months, warning it will evict them at their own cost.

Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) has given 68 individuals occupying its land in Jomvu, Mombasa County, three months to vacate, according to a public notice dated Tuesday, 27 October.

The notice covers land parcel LR No. JOMVU MN/V/222/2. KPLC said the occupants are in unlawful occupation of the property "without express/lawful authority or without any right or license under any law", and directed them to immediately stop any further activity on the land, remove buildings, structures and other improvements, clear any growing crops and livestock, and leave within 90 days.

The utility warned that eviction would proceed once the three-month window lapses, without a further notice. "Take notice that at the expiry of three months (ninety (90) days), we shall evict you without any further reference to you at your costs and peril," the notice read, adding that the occupants would bear the costs and risks associated with the exercise.

KPLC listed the affected individuals by name in the notice, among them Juolini Nthambi Dominic, Alex Musyoki Mutua, Juma Samson Kadenge and Juma Kamanza. The notice did not indicate what the company intends to do with the parcel after it is vacated, and made no provision for compensation or resettlement.
