Ghana EXIM Bank to develop 200-acre textile hub at Weta, Mahama says

President John Dramani Mahama says 200 acres have been acquired at Weta in the Volta Region for a light industrial area dedicated to textile and garment manufacturing, to be developed by Ghana EXIM Bank.

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to establish a light industrial area dedicated to textile and garment manufacturing at Weta in the Volta Region through the Ghana Export-Import Bank (Ghana EXIM Bank), saying 200 acres of land have been acquired for the project.

"We have commissioned the Ghana EXIM Bank to commence work on a Light Industrial Area in the Weta area. Two hundred acres of land have been acquired," Mahama said at the grand durbar of the 2026 Hogbetsotso Festival in Anloga.

The project is expected to create about 3,000 jobs initially, rising to 10,000 when fully operational, the president said. EXIM Bank chief executive Sylvester Adinam Mensah had flagged the Weta plans in September during the Asogli yam festival.

The announcement follows the commissioning in August 2026 of Northshore Apparel Ghana Limited's factory at Savelugu in the Northern Region, funded through a partnership involving Ghana EXIM Bank, Germany's KfW Development Bank and the Agricultural Development Bank. That plant has employed more than 2,300 people, with the workforce expected to reach 10,000 at full capacity.

Mahama described the Savelugu facility as a step towards restoring Northern Ghana's industrial base and advancing the government's 24-hour economy agenda. The Weta project signals an intention to extend garment and textile manufacturing investment to other parts of the country.

The land acquisition adds an industrial enclave to a pipeline of Ghanaian state-backed developments, with the Volta Regional site positioned to serve local and export garment production.
