FG, GIZ and AFD Move to Back Sustainable Housing Delivery in Nigeria

The Federal Government and the German and French development agencies GIZ and AFD have opened talks on supporting sustainable housing delivery under the Renewed Hope agenda, with the housing ministry restating a target of about 774,000 housing units.
The Federal Government and the German-French development agencies GIZ and AFD have concluded arrangements to work together on sustainable housing delivery, with both sides agreeing to translate planned interventions into tangible outcomes.
Minister of Housing and Urban Development Muttaqha Rabe Darma made the commitment when he received the leader of the GIZ delegation, Joshua Yari Garba, in Abuja, as part of wider consultations with stakeholders on support for Nigeria's housing sector.
Darma said the ministry would set up a dedicated team to follow up on the discussions and would formally communicate the areas requiring further engagement and implementation. He said the social housing programme is central to the Renewed Hope Administration's mandate, and that the Federal Government is committed to delivering about 774,000 housing units nationwide, starting with 11,000 units this year.
Garba, who is also Implementing Manager and Deputy Cluster Coordinator at GIZ, outlined potential areas of collaboration, including support for the Renewed Hope Housing Programme in partnership with the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority, a review of the National Building Code with emphasis on climate resilience, energy efficiency and green building standards, capacity building for ministry staff and artisans, an energy audit of the ministry building, and support for pilot housing projects.
The minister said the collaboration would strengthen capacity and promote sustainable building practices, adding that the ministry would engage the agencies in a two-way process allowing both sides to exchange ideas and align priorities.
