Enugu is taking a bold step to tackle its housing shortage with plans for 19,000 new homes. The twin developments could reshape the state's residential market while supporting long-term urban growth.
The Enugu State Executive Council has approved the construction of 19,000 housing units across two major residential developments to expand housing supply and address the state's growing housing deficit. The programme includes a 1,000-unit estate in New Enugu City and an 18,000-unit mass housing scheme at Gateway Estate, both supported by roads, water, electricity, and other essential infrastructure.
The developments form part of a broader urban growth strategy aimed at improving access to quality housing while encouraging planned residential expansion. Beyond increasing the housing stock, the projects are expected to stimulate construction activity, attract private investment, and create jobs across the real estate value chain.
If delivered as planned, the initiative will rank among Nigeria's largest state-backed housing programmes in recent years and could serve as a model for integrating large-scale residential development with supporting infrastructure.
