Eight injured as building collapses in Mamboleo, Kisumu

Eight people were injured when a building collapsed in Mamboleo, Kisumu County, with all residents successfully evacuated as multi-agency response teams moved to the scene, the Kenya Red Cross said.

The agency said six of the injured were treated at the scene, while two others in critical condition were referred to hospital for further medical attention. It issued its statement on September 21, 2026, after receiving reports of the collapse.

“Alongside a multi-agency response team, we have attended to eight injured people. Six were treated on site, while two in critical condition were referred to hospital. All residents have been successfully evacuated,” the Kenya Red Cross said.

The incident adds to a series of building failures in the lakeside city. In May 2026, a four-storey building under construction collapsed at Tom Mboya Estate, where one man was trapped in the rubble and rescued alive after an overnight operation. He sustained crush injuries and was taken to hospital.

Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o said at the time that preliminary findings pointed to possible non-compliance with building regulations, noting that the building’s plans had been approved in 2015 but the approval was not renewed after construction exceeded the stipulated three-year period. Investigations and a technical assessment were subsequently initiated.

The Red Cross said response teams were en route to the scene following reports of a building collapse in the county.
