Cape Town says red tape cleared as affordable housing construction gets under way

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis says the city has cut through the red tape holding back affordable housing construction, with building due to start in several areas as early as next week.
Cape Town Mayor and Democratic Alliance leader Geordin Hill-Lewis says the city has managed to unlock the red tape that had held back construction in the affordable housing market, with house construction in various areas of the city due to start as early as next week.
Hill-Lewis has formally launched the fifth electoral pledge on the construction of affordable housing in the City of Cape Town, including the surrounding townships, according to SABC News.
The announcement comes after the Constitutional Court ordered the city this year to provide a written report on its plans to correct the provision of adequate affordable housing.
Hill-Lewis said the project had been discussed in Cape Town for more than ten years without delivery. "For the longest time, we were stuck in the mud. It felt like we were swimming through peanut butter. But here in these last years, we have managed to cut through the red tape, clear away the mud, and get to the point of delivery. Construction is now underway. What a great feeling that is," he said.
