Rupert Wins R2.3bn Stellenbosch Power Battle Against Former Friend

Written on

South Africa’s richest man has come out on top in a fierce boardroom fight over a R2.3 billion Stellenbosch property deal. The dispute, which broke down a long-standing friendship, has now been settled in his favour.

Johann Rupert has secured control of The Bridge Stellenbosch development after a high-stakes dispute involving a R2.3 billion land transaction with former associate Rurik Göbel.

The case escalated from a business disagreement into court proceedings and governance battles over one of the Western Cape’s most ambitious mixed-use developments.

The conflict reportedly centred on control and financial arrangements tied to the large-scale precinct project, which is expected to contribute tens of billions of rand to the regional economy once fully developed.

The dispute also drew legal scrutiny and an independent investigation, highlighting tensions around governance in major private developments.

With the ruling now in Rupert’s favour, control of the project companies has been consolidated, allowing development to continue under clearer ownership structure.

The fallout has also ended a nearly two-decade friendship that once extended into business and leisure circles in Stellenbosch.
