The massive transformation of Cape Winelands Airport (formerly Fisantekraal Airfield) into a full-scale international commercial hub has hit a highly anticipated milestone.
The facility's development team has officially released the first architectural concept designs by Boogertman + Partners Architects, offering a striking visual preview of the planned R8 billion expansion.
The terminal design relies heavily on a state-of-the-art undulating glass-and-steel canopy that mirrors the rolling patterns of the Western Cape's world-famous vineyards and dramatic mountain backdrops, integrating outdoor landscaping directly into the traveler experience.
The multi-billion-rand megaproject has recently cleared its largest regulatory hurdles, securing formal Strategic Integrated Project (SIP) 17 status from Infrastructure South Africa and finalizing extensive environmental authorizations.
Strategic partner Growthpoint Properties will co-develop and manage a massive 450-hectare mixed-use aviation and logistics precinct immediately adjacent to the airfield.
Enabled by a green-innovation partnership with Stellenbosch University, Phase 1 construction—slated to begin later in 2026—will feature a realigned 3.5 km Code 4F runway capable of handling wide-body aircraft. Initial operations are targeted to launch as early as 2028, with the ultimate goal of accommodating up to 5.2 million passengers annually by 2050.
